#3: autumn update (11/10)

Dear RS100 sailors,

We thought it was about time for a quick update from RS100sailing.com.

The nights have definitely drawn in and the brave few foolhardy enough to come along the RS Last Shout Championship at Rutland SC this weekend are already toying with the idea of dusting off the drysuits.  Not surprising really- this weekend’s forecast looks good, well a decent breeze anyway, even if it’s a little parky.  We’ve got 3 races on Saturday, followed by another legendary all class RS Party in the evening that should see off the winter woes with some good racing and a  few beers.  Then if this isn’t enough, there’s a long pursuit race around Rutland on Sunday morning to blow away the cobwebs and pit the 100 against the rest of the RS sorority… we’ll expect some chatter from the other classes no doubt.

A few things have been happening behind the scenes.  The team at RS Sailing have been busy developing a training DVD with Mark Powell and Mark Rushall.  This will come out shortly, however a few sneak peeks are available on the http://www.rs100sailing.com website.  Secondly, some official promotional material is coming out to help keep the class buzzing, supported of course by a few more good old fashioned demo events which have resulted in new boat orders for next season.

There’s some great news for the lighter weight members of your family… no longer will they look longingly at your new toy; they can use the newly developed 7.4 metre mainsail to take your boat out.  Of course, you’ll probably need to invest in an unabridged copy of War & Peace to pass the time; failing that, buy yourself an iPad and check in to http://www.rs100sailing.com to see how much fun they’re having with your boat… but hey, nothing like seeing the positives!

A lovely video from St Raphael featuring some stunning sailing photography is also available for you to, well, feel slightly annoyed at given the recent lack of decent sailing conditions in the UK; especially if you missed out what looked like a most amazing RS100 sailing experience.  Sit back, relax, grab a coffee… there’s 3 minutes of lovely RS100 sailing captured just for your entertainment right here!

This month’s edition of Yachts and Yachting Magazine features their annual Racing Classes Guide.  The RS100 is one of the hotly tipped classes for next year and they are expecting us to get into the ’50+ club’ after next year’s UK Nationals.  There’s already some good vibes about this future event.  It is part of the RS Games, running in Weymouth from the 16th to the 26th August 2010.  This will be a unique opportunity to really experience an event on this scale.  It is after-all, the tester for the Olympics the following year!  Our Nationals run 16th -19th August 2011- further details are here.

Apologies if this news bulletin has seemed a little European-focused so far.  We are also happy to report some great news of RS100 sailing in both the US and Australia.   There’s a shout out to the US sailors on the website here, please get in touch with Rich Barry who’s keen as mustard to get a few of you guys together for some racing.  Secondly an RS100 has been spotted at the well regarded Zhik Single Handed Regatta down under… more news to hopefully surface in due course.  However if anyone’s interested in finding out about RS100s in Australia, then please visit:  http://www.rssailing.com.au/rs100.html

Stay tuned for more information to come about the RS100 over the winter.  We will have a report from Last Shout Championship next week, plus the committee are actively working on the official events programme for 2011 and the DVD announcement is imminent.

Happy sailing- keep warm, tie your boats down and don’t get too fat on the turkey… there’s some hiking to do next year!

Best regards,

Jimbo – RS100 GBR 107
